Approximately 2 500 water and electricity meters are read every day (38 105 per month) throughout the Overstrand.
Overstrand Municipality aims to read all water and electricity meters once a month to calculate your monthly water and sewerage use. However, some are not read every month for a variety of reasons, but usually because the meter readers are unable to access it.
Meter readings can also fluctuate depending on the weather, weekends and public holidays.
When estimates are used, the municipality is obliged to make corrections once meter readings can resume so that the consumer’s water bill reflects actual water consumption. These corrections can result in either a credit or debit adjustment.
The dates between readings play an important role as the system provides for calculation in accordance with the number of days, thus, if it is a longer period, you will receive more kl units consumed per sliding scale, to avoid incorrect charging, (example, 45 days’ consumption will be calculated as 30 days as well as another 15 days on the lower tariff of the sliding scale).
You can help the Municipality to get an accurate reading for your water and electricity meters by doing the following:
- Make sure you know where your water meter is located.
- Your water meter should be always accessible to municipal officials.
- Make sure it is not obstructed (e.g by sand or weeds) and is easy to access and read. If your water meter is behind locked gates, or if dogs prevent the meter readers from taking a reading, you can submit the reading yourself and submit it to the finance department timeously.
